Construit en collaboration avec la performeuse Marija Iva Gocić et la compositrice expérimentale Emmanuelle Parrenin, Swamp Spell est un rituel de réminiscence du paysage.
Créée spécifiquement pour le festival Performissima dans le contexte historique du Marais, la performance réactive le passé agraire du centre de Paris, des siècles en arrière lorsque ce quartier n’était encore qu’un marécage.
Le marais incarne ici une double nature : il est à la fois une porte d’entrée imaginaire vers l’au-delà et un milieu d’une extrême fertilité. Sous sa surface repose une stratification dense de matière organique, de temps sédimenté, de siècles de vie enfouis dans la terre. C’est un lieu transitionnel, qui ouvre à un changement d’état.
La participation à cette œuvre se déploie à travers différentes actions en improvisation accordées au rythme lent et transformateur du marais. Invoquant des êtres surnaturels et mobilisant la transe comme vecteur exploratoire, Marija Iva Gocić et Chloé Sassi – accompagnées d’Emmanuelle Parrenin à la vielle à roue (instrument ancré dans le Moyen Âge) – proposent un espace de contact où les gestes deviennent portails. Cherchant à accéder aux dimensions submergées du lieu, elles invitent à ressentir l’audience à ressentir l’environnement dans ses multiples couches temporelles.

Created specifically for the Performissima festival in the historical context of the Marais district, the performance reactivates the agrarian past of central Paris, centuries back when this neighborhood was still a marshland.
Here, the marsh embodies a double nature: it is both an imaginary gateway to the beyond and an environment of extreme fertility. Beneath its surface lies a dense stratification of organic matter, of sedimented time, of centuries of life buried in the earth. It is a transitional place, opening the way to a change of state.
Participation in this work unfolds through various improvised actions attuned to the slow, transformative rhythm of the marsh. Invoking supernatural beings and using trance as an exploratory vector, Marija Iva Gocić and Chloé Sassi—accompanied by Emmanuelle Parrenin on the hurdy-gurdy (an instrument rooted in the Middle Ages)—propose a contact zone where gestures become portals. Seeking to access the submerged dimensions of the site, they invite the audience to sense the environment through its multiple temporal layers.
